Scribe

Helen’s friend Lily works at the lovely new Scribe winery in Sonoma.  She had us for a luncheon tasting on a rainy norcal day.

There is an old hacienda on the estate, built sometime in the 19th century.

It seems not much has changed since then.

The winery is called Scribe because they see themselves as scribes of a palimpsestic land, replanting and retracing the history of the land itself.

I love that word, palimpsest: writing material used one or more times after earlier writing has been erased; something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface.  Even the walls, layers of old newsprint and plaster, are a palimpsest.

Thanks Lily!

  1. Living here, I’ve been to many wineries, but never seen this one even at a distance. Once the building is restored to its former glory, it would make a beautiful tasting room.

  2. This building will make a wonderful tasting room after it is restored.
